Food for thought

Happy Thanksgiving Day!

Well, today is Thanksgiving.  A day where people open their homes, prepare large feasts, and everyone spends a few hours enjoying company, breaking bread, and deliberately being thankful.

This year there was a social media activity of “30 days of gratitude” that I tried to participate in.  Posting things that I’m grateful for in my life.  I didn’t post every day, but I did try to post a few to highlight all the positive things in my life.   Part of that was the exercise of really taking the time to recognize.  To me, that was more significant than sharing it on social media.  During that time I often did some searching for quotes that were inspirational.  For those that know me, know that I love quotes!  … a quick sentence of inspirational words for me to meditate on.  Love quotes!

This week, I came across this one…

“Happiness cannot be traveled to, owned, earned, worn or consumed.  Happiness is the spiritual experience of living every minute with Love, Grace, & Gratitude.” – Denis Waitley.

There are many scriptures about how following Christ, gives us joy.  How being obedient to His word, will provide us peace and joy… the unspeakable kind.

1 Peter 1:7-9 (KJV) That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ: Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory: Receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls.

Joy is not found in the Thanksgiving meal.  Joy is found in living a life with purpose and one with reverence to God.   Joy is found in the company of loved ones, when you look around the room and feel the laughter, feel the love, feel the connection to those that are important in your life.

So often we focus on all the preparations for a day like today.  But I encourage you to make sure you also take time to soak in more than the gravy on your plate.  Take time and pause… look around the room and make those connections.  Give kindness, hugs, compliments, encouragement, … give the gifts that are free.

“Thanks” giving doesn’t begin or end today.

One last quote today…. In regards to food, … I encourage you to enjoy the treats of today.  But encourage you to maintain your balance.  Taste everything, but listen to your body.  It will tell you what you need.

“Most people do not listen with the intent to understand; they listen with the intent to reply” – Steven Covey.

Listen to your body with the intent to understand it.  This week so far, I’ve been working at listening… and there have been a few moments where I didn’t listen at all.  For those moments, the result was a feeling that I didn’t necessarily enjoy.  So instead of beating myself up, I adjusted.  I took time to move, or I made a different choice that served me better…  Progress, not perfection.  Let’s keep focused.

Status quo is just existing.  But you are more than status quo.  You are wonderfully made.  You are exceptional.  You are worthy of joy, peace, and grace.  There are no bad decisions, or bad foods… just balance that must be achieved to support your healthy lifestyle.  You’ve been working on having a healthy lifestyle, then it makes sense that your approach has already shifted… things you enjoy are now different… your tastes are different… what you need or want is different…  Don’t forget this aspect as you approach today.  It’s ok to listen to understand, adjust, and enjoy.

Happy Thanksgiving Day!  May you breathe in all that wonderful sounds, and smells into your soul, and allow those moments to overflow your cup and leave you with renewed strength for tomorrow.

I would love to know what you are grateful for and about your day!  Please comment and share.  🙂

God Bless, XOXOXO
